Training

Our training philosophy is simple: Dogs are friends, family and coworkers and we believe they deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and kindness. We use modern and time-tested, science-based, positive reinforcement training. We help humans understand how dogs learn. We will never use fear, intimidation or pain to train any dog.

green DogGoods offers both group classes and individual lessons. Our classes can accommodate two handlers per dog. If one handler is a child we request they be at least 10 years old. If you choose individual lessons any number of people may attend and children of any age are welcome, in fact encouraged, to attend. Please explore some of our offerings below!

Jane

green DogGoods has transformed life for our dog, Dash, who came to us as a “last chance, special needs” adoption due to previous abuse. He had been adopted and returned multiple times. After trying another trainer in town with no improvement, we took Dash here for training. Lesley and Jody immediately identified Dash as suffering from fear aggression and provided us with a completely new approach using lovingly firm and positive reinforcement techniques. We threw away his painful prong collar and abandoned the harsh German commands. We learned Dash wasn’t a “bad” dog who needed to be mastered, but rather a fearful, little dog who needed confidence in himself and his caretakers. The positive techniques they taught us have given Dash a new “leash” on life. Dash is living his very best life due to the love and guidance provided by the great folks at green DogGoods.

We will focus on many of the common puppy concerns such as, but not limited to:

  • mouthing
  • biting,
  • jumping
  • “zoomies”,
  • potty or house training
  • handling and restraint (for vet visits, nail trims and the like)
  • basic behaviors such as
    • sit,
    • down
    • wait or stay
    • Name recognition and attention
    • Recall (come when called)
    • Greet politely
    • Beginning leash work

This class will teach you how to help your puppy make good decisions and improve their frustration and tolerance by developing a sense of partnership and teamwork. We will help you establish a very clear way to communicate with your puppy based on how they learn so that they will be happy to focus on you for feedback rather than the distracting environment.

Good Start
Price $130
Age of dogs 5 months old older
Requirements No known behavioral issues
Current on vaccinations or titer test
# of sessions 5 45-minute sessions

Good Start class will help your dog gain impulse control, improve frustration tolerance and focus better on you rather than the very distracting environment. We will help them learn to look to you for feedback and direction.

Many dogs join this class with the ability to already perform basic behaviors. This class will help them learn to perform these behaviors and others in a distracting environment and for a longer period of time.

One of our goals is to help you learn to communicate with your dog in a clear and supportive language that dogs understand. This will strengthen your bond to last a lifetime.

Specific behaviors include:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay or Wait
  • Drop-it
  • Polite greetings with people and other dogs
  • Recall (come when called)
  • Attention to name and focus
  • Leash training (Beginning)

Remember, we help your dog become a thinking dog rather than a reacting dog. One that makes good decisions based on your teaching. Helping with impulse control while practicing specific behaviors can help your dog become more settled and have better focus around the everyday distractions of life!

This class is great for dogs new to you or dogs that have done little training up to this point. We assume these dogs are no longer dealing with the younger puppy issues but certainly can help you if they are struggling in any of these areas.

Manners Class is a Level II class for dogs that have attended either the Good Start Class or Puppy Primary. If your dog has not attended one of these classes, please call and talk to us to find a class that is the right fit. We would expect your dog to have mastered the behaviors from those classes at least at home where the distractions are minimal. We understand that sometimes with the added distractions of a class setting dogs can struggle a bit. This is the advantage of working in this setting. We can help them learn to pay better attention in times of distraction as long as the behaviors are solid with fewer distractions.

AKC Canine Good Citizen
Price $130

Age of dogs Any
Requirements See course explanation

The Canine Good Citizen Program (CGC) was designed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to reward dogs with good manners at home and in the community. The program teaches good manners to dogs and responsible ownership to their owners. Many therapy or visiting groups require the CGC designation in order to participate.

CGC class is designed to teach handlers about the evaluation and how best to practice. We do not teach the required behaviors in this class. It is assumed that your dog will be well versed in the behaviors necessary to pass the test.

If you have competed previous classes with us, particularly the Manners and Distractions classes, you and your dog should be ready to tackle this challenge. You are welcome to register for the test.

AKC CGC Test Exercises:

  1. Accepting a friendly stranger
  2. Sitting politely for petting
  3. Appearance and grooming
  4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
  5. Walking through a crowd
  6. Sit and down on command and Staying in place
  7. Coming when called
  8. Reaction to another dog
  9. Reaction to distraction
  10. Supervised separation

We will, of course, help your dog with specific behaviors in additional individual training sessions if you would like to schedule them at our regular rates. You may schedule these in addition to or in lieu of the group class.

You are also welcome to register for the CGC evaluation without receiving any instruction from a green DogGoods trainer. The fee will be $25.

Individual/Custom
Price $65 per session or a package:
$180 for three 45-minute sessions
Age of dogs All

Individual training sessions might be the best fit for you depending on your dog’s challenges or your schedule. If your dog has a specific training need, is too excited or reactive around other dogs, or simply has trouble focusing, this is likely your best option. We can design training around your needs rather than follow the set curriculum required in a class setting. Additionally, we can accommodate as many people as you like, including young children, in your individual training sessions. Please contact us about your specific needs.

Note: We require a 48 hour notice of cancelation for private lessons. Training is non-refundable per store policy. Additional policies will be emailed at the time of scheduling.
